We all know that taking care of our skin can make our appearance more fresh and youthful. Your face is the first thing people see when they meet you and therefore it is important to use good skin care. The days of needing to buy very expensive cleansers, creams, masks or serums to put together a good care regime for your skin have gone as high street pharmacies have stepped up their offerings dramatically and carry good care systems for every skin type at every stage. It is always good to know what your skin type is before buying your basic products. When you have dry skin it might be a good idea to look out for products especially with the dry skin in mind. Same goes for the combination and oily skin types. High on the skin care agenda should always be to have a day cream with a SPF of 30 or more (we found a great primer from B. at Superdrug with SPF 30. The B. Protected Anti-Pollution Shielding Primer, currently £6.45 ).
Of course, genes play an important role too. When your grand parents and parents did not develop many wrinkles when they got older, there is a good chance that your skin won’t develop them that fast either. But don't worry if you are not genetically blessed. It is more important is keeping a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, getting enough sleep, healthy food and not too much alcohol (alcohol can have a very bad dehydrating effect on the skin), drink plenty of water and no smoking. Smoking is one of the most awful things you can do to your skin as it ages the skin much faster because when you smoke your blood vessels spasm which decreases circulation and oxygen levels in your body and this will affect your skin and its appearance. Then there is makeup. Although makeup can’t reduce wrinkles, it can help us look a bit more rested and can help with evening out skin tone. As even with proper skin care and a healthy lifestyle, as human beings we will get older and our skin might need a bit of help to look more refreshed. Picking the right foundation colour is crucial in achieving a youthful look. Too dark and you will look haggard, too light and bright, you will look like a clown or geisha. With so many foundations around it might be very daunting to find the correct colour. You can get matched by a beauty consultant at a beauty counter or try out a few foundations from a few different high street brands that you think are a close colour match. Don’t forget that high street makeup brands have stepped up their game these last few years with bringing out foundations that are just as good as the high-end brands. It really is worth the try.
Cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges regularly to help fight the signs of ageing. Sounds crazy but skin that constantly comes into contact with dirt and bacteria can start to show signs of ageing much faster. Your brushes and sponges contain dirt, old makeup, oil, dead skin cells and bacteria like streptococcus, which can cause skin infections. You would need medical treatment with eg antibiotics to treat the infection. By using dirty brushes and sponges your skin will feel constant under stress and as a reaction to stress the collagen and elastin in your skin will break down much quicker and it will lose its youthful appearance. Keeping makeup brushes and sponges clean will not only prevent cross contamination of beauty products but also help with keeping your skin in tip top condition. Try cleaning your brushes every week and your sponge every day. Our Spongeclean Foundation Blender cleanser will be out later this year to easily clean your sponges. In the meantime, use a mild soap and lukewarm water to wash your brushes and sponges.

To sanitise and kill the bacteria in your beauty blender, put your Foundation Blender in the microwave for 30 secs.
This will work with any good quality makeup sponge and will kill all the nasty bacteria that have been sitting in there for too long. Your skin will love you for it. After cleaning put your sponge in one of our Spongedry holders to avoid new bacteria growth and to keep your beauty sponge cleaner for longer. Until the end of April, with code: POUNDOFF you'll get £3 off when you spend £14.99. Visit www.basicbeautytools.com
